A Notary's duty is to screen the signers of important documents for their true identity, their willingness to sign without duress or intimidation, and their awareness of the contents of the document or transaction. Some notarizations also require the Notary to put the signer under an oath, declaring under penalty of perjury that the information contained in a document is true and correct. Property deeds, wills and powers of attorney are examples of documents that commonly require a Notary.
Impartiality is the foundation of the Notary Public's trust. They are duty-bound not to act in situations where they have a personal interest. The public trusts that the Notary's screening tasks have not been corrupted by self-interest. Impartiality dictates that a Notary Public never refuse to serve a person due to race, nationality, religion, politics, sexual orientation or status as a non-customer.

A wedding officiant is perhaps best known as the person who leads the ceremony. However, that's only part of our job. A wedding officiant is anyone who can legally officiate a marriage ceremony. A wedding officiant often refers to a non-denominational and sometimes non-religious official who carries no affiliation with a church. Couples who don’t regularly attend a religious service or church often find this sort of wedding officiant ideal because of the flexibility this approach affords. When you use a non-denominational wedding officiant, you aren’t bound by the limits of any specific religious tradition or dogma.
An officiant, whether secular or religious, works with the couple in the days/weeks/months before the wedding day to craft the ceremony, which may include personal vows, readings, music selections, and more. The officiant must be legally ordained to perform weddings in your state and understand your jurisdiction's laws as they pertain to the marriage license. On your wedding day, your officiant will fill out and sign the marriage license (along with witnesses) and send it back to the county clerk's office for certification. This may sound like a minor detail, but without a marriage license, you're not actually married—so your wedding officiant has an essential role to play here.
As a wedding officiant I will never refuse to serve a person due to race, nationality, religion, politics, sexual orientation or status.
TIPS ON CHOOSING A WEDDING OFFICIANT from Wedding Wire
* Get to know your wedding officiant, because he/she is going to play an important role in your wedding.
* Make sure their values line up with yours..
* It’s essential that you and your partner actually get along with your officiant.
* Couples to inquire about the type of ceremony their officiant is able to perform, such as religious, non-denominational, interfaith, spiritual, or commitment.
* Officiants will work from a particular wedding ceremony script, but it’s essential to ask if they work to customize the details. “A ceremony should be a unique reflection of your love story and journey as a couple."
* Be wary of an officiant who says they don’t need any input.
* If you’re planning a wedding rehearsal, be sure to ask if your officiant will be able to attend and if they are comfortable taking the lead.
* Your officiant should communicate what they’ll wear for your ceremony and in what color.
* In case of illness or unforeseen circumstances, ask if your officiant is prepared with someone to take their place if need be.
* What are your fees?
